A Hippopotamus named Bresta examines a birthday gift Kiev's Zoo, Ukraine, on June 30. The animal, weighing 2,000 kilograms, celebrates its 50th birthday.
My friend, Nick, never fails to pass along a new hippo pic to yours truly. And I never fail to post it. However, this particular pic can only be truly enjoyed if I post Nick's commentary along with it. See below.

"PS - Named Bresta?! WTF? I love me some Brestas!"
Well, Nick, I now love me some Brestas too :) Thanks!!

Tonight, I became fascinated by Bertrand Russell. I have been reading and following link after link for hours. I'm obsessed and I need someone to come over and take the computer away from me. Now please. His language is mesmerizing and thought processes unique. I find myself wanting to be like him. So far, I have found only two major differences between us. 1)He is a guy and I am a girl. 2)He is a thinker and I am a feeler. I wonder if two people who are different in seemingly only those two aspects could get along. Thoughts? Feelings? Get it? No? Moving on.
Favourite BR quotes thus far:
"The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time"
- which is why I've been link after linking
"Love is something far more than desire for sexual intercourse; it is the principal means of escape from the loneliness which afflicts most men and women throughout the greater part of their lives"
- not sure I understand this one fully BUT it is still good to know. Is this what all of those angst driven female songwriters of the 90s were singing about(intellectual intercourse)?
"Anything you're good at contributes to happiness"
-La la la la la laaaaaaaa (me singing) la la la
"Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric"
- It's not the cough that carries you off, it's the coffin they carry you off in.
Oh! 3)He's dead and I am alive. Three things.
Whatever, I'm going to bed now. Blurgity blurg blurg.

One of many awesome posts to come
Flogging Molly pounds and so do I :)
Mike and I drove north one fine weekend
To see a rockin' concert by our favourite band.
Jannus Landing was the venue, in downtown St Pete
And my friends, Craig and Suzie, we also did meet.
Early dinner of Thai food
put us all in a good mood
But when it was time to buy some tickets
Well, it wasn't looking so good.
A sold out show, no ticket for me
The scalpers wanted astronomical fees!!
Situation was dire, we headed to the bar
But we couldn't give up, we'd driven too far.
On the way to Independant, who did we see?
Flogging Molly members eating dinner of sushi...
I mustered some courage and snuck away from my friends
To approach the band and find a way in.
Nathan, the bass player, remembered me!
He signed my shoe two years ago (and I kissed him on the cheek)
After some banter, I asked in a fanatical way
"Is there any chance I can get in to see you play?!"
They gave me a hard time, telling me "No way"
But after I cried, they said "okay...okay!"
Is it just you, or do you need a plus one?
"Plus one" I exclaimed - OMG what have I done?!!
We all enjoyed the show, Mike and I moshed
And as much as we drank, we didn't get sloshed.
I hope you believe me, I swear I'm not lying
Oh, and for the record, I'm kidding about crying.

Another Overdue West Coast Vacation Post:
I have to blog these stories and pics to make room in the queue for more West Coast and Upper East Coast and International Travel vacations coming up...I may become an official jet-setter this year!
PORTLAND for one please - Feb 21, 2007
Took the Amtrak from Seattle to Portland. Very scenic. Ports. Mountains. Pacific Ocean. Train noises. I pulled into Union Station (is every train station named that?) and walked south to W Burnside Street.

This is me on the train. I was experimenting with my camera. Ironic considering these posted pics are last pics that camera ever took. Boo hoo :(
I settled into my hotel, Park Lane Suites, on King Ave. Just so we're clear, when I say 'settled' you know that means I ditched my stuff and left immediately right? K. I headed to what is called Northwest District on foot to meet up with Kaitlyn, my friend Tone's girlfriend, that I am also friends with. We met at Swagat Indian Cuisine where I devoured the following:

Whoever can accurately guess everything on the plate will receive one kiss on the cheek and some shoulder shakes from me.

This sculpture is one of the coolest I have ever seen. The only thing that would make it better is if it were some Hippos. Duh.

Kaitlyn and I on the Portland Streetcar!!! The guy who took this went a little crazy with the zoom feature. Sorry about that. Streetcar = free fun.
That was THE LAST picture my camera took. It made some sad little noises and then never worked again. I have yet to get a new one. It broke over a year ago! I am a slacker blogger for sure.
Anyways, we had dinner at Pastini's which was across the Willamette River and then I tried to get a piercing but we were five minutes late and the place was closed. Kaitlyn dropped me off at Crystal Ballroom where I rocked out to The Shins for the second night in a row (and third time in two days). Heather, the chick I sold my extra ticket to, gave me a ride back to my hotel because it was raining. She told me about her son named Espn (pronounced Espen). I'm not joking. Her husband is a sports fanatic and they named their child accordingly. Normally they would be subject to far more ridicule and scrutiny from me but, alas, they are Shins fans and we don't dis each other.
Slept, woke up, breakfast at a bagel shop and the Red Line to PDX. Short flight to Vegas and that is another blog post pending...

Translation...sans pictures (sigh)
Costa Rica Vacation
First of all, I have to thank my totally awesome crazy ass boyfriend for the idea and execution of this vacation. It was perfect, everything was perfect!
Feb 14th: We landed in San Jose and took the winding, cliff side roads to Manual Antonio. We stopped briefly in Jaco to get lunch at Taco Bar and to rent a surf board...Taco Bar is the shit. Once in Manual Antonio, we immediately checked in to the very gay friendly Hotel Del Mar and couldn't resist a dip in the Pacific before the most amazing and romantic Valentine's Day evening in the history of the world at La Mariposa. I will sum it up like this: hilariously poignant valentine card, the most fantasmigorical views I've ever seen, pink red and white fireworks BELOW us (yes, that is how high up we were), five course meal with champagne and wine and great chats. PS - my dinner date was really cute.
Day 2 - Manuel Antonio Beach ALL DAY. Surfing, exploring cliffs, the freshest ceviche and calamari ever, happy hour and sunset at El Avion featuring my new favourite beer, BAVARIA LIGHT. El Avion was so cool. Check it out, seriously. Then, more drinks at a beach side bar where I was force fed a black olive because 'someone' thought I would be too drunk to taste it. WRONG.
Day 3 - Zip line tour through the rainforest's canopy = so much fun! I got running starts to go faster, hung upside down and was called Sarita all day. Loved it. Made some new friends from New York and Toronto. What's up Jen?! Midday, we headed to Playa Hermosa...which, not surprisingly, was also beautiful and awesome. We checked in to Villas de Arenas, traded the surf board, saw some sights and had a delicious Argentinian Steakhouse dinner (I had fish).
Day 4 - early morning surfing and swimming & KICK ASS breakfast next door: Pineapple smoothie, fantastic coffee, juevos rancheros, french toast and gallo pinto...so yum. To digest, we did some off roading in the rental car to an alleged river mouth surf spot. Didn't exactly find it. Then, more surfing and body boarding in Jaco, more brews for happy hour and more Taco Bar :) Back to Playa Hermosa and the hotel for ping pong and an early bed time...
Last day :( - more surfing, more food, more fun...you get it...now GO!
Vacation tidbits I didn't mention but don't want to forget:
A hippo ate my belly button
Mike was my longboard
Caveman imitation on Valentine's
strategically placed athletic tape
dancing in the airport gift shop
crazy color coordinated gringa

Leap Years are both awesome and ANNOYING!
Julius Caesar invented leap year. So that means it is an ancient roman tradition which was handed down some generations and across Europe and eventually brought to the western hemisphere and the new world on big ships by Anglo-Saxon caucasian sailors from Spain. Blah blah blah...we could chat four years about the subject and I am sure there are those out there that do. I mean, February 29 is cool and everything, it was supposed to be the day I was born. However, I was two days late thanks to my ENFP-ness and now it means that every fours years I have to wait a painstakingly long extra day to celebrate the actual most awesome day of the year: MY BIRTHDAY :)
In case you are not a mathlete, I was born March 2, the greatest day ever.

Gourmet Dinner
So, I found out last night that my immediate family thinks my cooking sucks. SHA! It was a real blow. However, considering I just made the best dinner of all time, I will refute.
I can cook. It may be simple and it may be according to my blood type, but it's good. Whole wheat spaghetti with turkey meatballs, tofu fried brown rice, breakfast burritos featuring Ezekiel 4:19 tortillas, frozen organic pizza (425 degrees for 25 minutes)...I've made it all...how do you like me now?! But tonight was macaroni and cheese heaven.
Start with Annie's Homegrown Totally Natural Shells & White Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese (the original biotch!). Prepare according to box directions. Add one and one half tablespoons Tastefully Simple All Natural Dried Tomato & Garlic Pesto Mix and VIOLA! You can all thank me later.

AWESOME BAND ALERT!!!!
Vampire Weekend is on my radar for sure. I like them so much, I even listen to them mid-week, I'm crazy like that. The video I have chosen to show you is one of many on youtube. I am posting it here for the following reasons:
1. It's Letterman dope.
2. They are adorable.
3. The lead singer looks like my Uncle Paul circa 1980-86.
4. Singing along is superfun.
5. I'm studying the drum part with Punisher-like intensity.
I also recently learned that Vampire Weekend opened up for The Shins on five European tour dates. I now have a love/hate relationship with anyone who went to one of those shows. Mosty love though, that's just how I roll.
Sarah out.

Día 2 - Manuel Antonio Beach ALL DAY.
Made amigos de Nueva York y Toronto.
GO!
Cositas de mis recuerdos más de su ocio:
Un hipopótamo comió mi ombligo
Mike era mi longboard
Caveman imitación de San Valentín
Estratégicamente colocado cinta de atletismo
Baile en el aeropuerto tienda de regalos
Color coordinado gringa loca

I still want one...
Big thanks to the USCG members who still look out for my hippo-loving-ass! I know that Chris just happen to stumble across this while researching at work. Hippos also guard coasts...in Africa.

Totally bitchin' weekends worth mentioning
This past weekend was Gasparilla. Drunkards, Wenches, Pirates and Land-Lubbers galore...it was quite the spectacle. And for once, I was not quite the spectacle. Then Busch Gardens on Sunday: we rode EVERY coaster at least twice and sometimes, three times. A salad fork.
Weekend of the 19th. Business dinner that turned into a drunken poker fest. I won big. Who was it that said I had no poker face? Well, I do and it looks like this, :)
Weekend of the 5th. Football and Fultons = great time. Jones sodas at every Seahawks score. The Cider House (?) bar. Drumming for hours.
Weekend of Dec 29th. Partying at a South Beach outdoor pool bar chickee thing with some awesome friends: Jimmy, Vanessa and Champagne. Got asked to wear MK's varsity jacket. I immediately put it on over my party dress.
Weekend of Dec 15. Frat House Partying at FIT. Fun road trip. Frat house Olympics Commenced.
I could elaborate but I sensed your boredom.

THE FOUR AGREEMENTS
BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean.
DON'T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY
Nothing others do is because of you. What others
say and do is a projection of their own reality.
DON'T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS
Find the courage to ask questions and to express
what you really want. Communicate with others as
clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings and
drama.
ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST
Your best is going to change from moment to moment;
it will be different when you are healthy as
opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do
your best!.
>>The above is research for the survival guide. I
struggle with only one of these four agreements.
How about you?

AO 08
So the Australian Open has begun. As if I need another sport to follow! Soccer, hockey and, yes, football has been consuming what little free time I have these days. Sigh, guess I'll have to fit watching and playing tennis in there now too (secret WOO HOO!!!!)
I am reminded of a fun game I play. It is exactly like Marco-Polo in every way except instead of yelling 'MARCO' I yell 'ROGER' and instead of 'POLO' I yell 'FEDERER'
Let's play.
ROGER!!!...

Because some consider me a wealth of knowledge...
FACT: In the 1400s a law was set forth in England that a man was allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb. Hence we have "the rule of thumb".
FACT: In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase "goodnight, sleep tight".
FACT: It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after a wedding, the bride's father would supply his new son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.
FACT: In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts... So in old England, when customers got unruly, to settle them the bartender would yell, "Mind your pints and quarts!" It's where we get the phrase "mind your P's and Q's".
FACT: Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim or handle of their ceramic mugs. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your whistle" is the phrase inspired by this practice.
...I'm trying to live up to the reputation.
